Biography

In 1979, Dan began touring the Midwest in variety bands playing and singing songs by artists ranging from Tony Bennett to the Beatles and all the in betweens. Inspired by performing the music of his era, Dan began composing his own music.
After nearly 10 years of playing honky tonks, county fairs, ballrooms and street dances throughout the Midwest, the desire to play in the big time won out and Dan moved to Nashville to pursue and perfect his picking, singing and writing. Through a network of friends Dan secured an audition for the lead acoustic and electric guitar chair in the touring band of Capitol recording artist, Billy Dean. Passing the audition Billy Dean and his band “The Regulators” hit the road as the opening act for the “Judd’s” farewell tour. As the hits kept coming, the tours and TV appearances came as well. While playing guitar for Billy Dean, Dan performed twice on the Jay Leno Show, 10 times on the Grand Ole Opry, Austin City Limits, Nashville Now, participated in seven major tours and received two gold records for his part in promoting and performing on those albums.

In 1995, Dan left Billy Dean choosing to spend more time in his then hometown of Aberdeen SD. To keep his hand in the writing, playing and singing part of his life Dan Mahar Music Works was created. This company was and is in the business of creating musical brands also known as “jingles.” In December of 2001 Dan and his wife Mary Groth moved to Sioux Falls. Continuing to work the business, Dan also began teaching guitar and performing regularly around town.
Since moving to Sioux Falls his first record of original blues was written, recorded and released in June of 2007. “Long Stones Throw” was primarily recorded in Nashville with some old friends from the Billy Dean days. A new record “Songs from the Second Half” is due to be released in November 2009. Currently, Dan is teaching guitar, performing locally, finishing a new record and enjoying life in South Dakota.
